OCD Therapy

Weaving together proven Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) treatment and emotion-focused work.

Focus on real-life, values-based exposures, stopping rumination, and addressing underlying emotional/relational factors that often get missed in traditional OCD treatment.

My Approach

My own lived experience with OCD and receiving treatment has given me profound respect for others who seek the same for themselves. My approach is most heavily influenced by the work of Dr. Michael J. Greenberg and his treatment modality, Rumination-Focused ERP (RF-ERP, more info here). RF-ERP primarily focuses on reducing compulsive rumination (otherwise known as mental compulsions), which fuels avoidance and other compulsive behaviors. Instead of taking a “Fear Factor” approach to treatment involving elaborate exposures intended to induce anxiety, RF-ERP aims to first help clients learn how to stop ruminating, and once ready, move toward engaging in avoided activities and addressing triggers. Additionally, if indicated, RF-ERP incorporates psychoanalytic techniques to address underlying emotional and relational factors that tend to be correlated with OCD development.

Emphasizing your agency

People with OCD often feel a lack of agency to begin with. In my view, OCD treatment should not replicate this dynamic through therapists setting rigid agendas or enforcing compliance. We will focus on the goals you want to address and leave the rest.

Whole-person treatment

I am deeply interested in my clients’ lives beyond their OCD. While initial treatment may focus primarily on addressing OCD, you are always welcome to bring other issues you’d like to address into therapy. It goes without saying, but OCD does not occur within a vacuum.
